Chapter Thirteen

Hester was pleasantly surprised to find her sleep dream free and awakened feeling refreshed. She’d slept so well she’d missed her alarm and was late for work. She hoped the health inspector hadn’t arrived yet. She grabbed her cellphone, found Blair’s number, and pressed the little phone button. As the call started, she tapped the speaker button and set the phone down. It rang twice before Blair picked it up.

“I thought you said you wanted to be here to meet the health inspector?” Blair said without greeting.

“I do. I overslept. Is he there already?”

“No, and I still have no idea when he’s coming. Will you be here soon?”

“Yes. Is Carmen there yet?”

“Honestly, I have no idea. I’m in my office trying to find a way out of this mess. The rest of the shops are opening today, though, so I do hope you’ll be here soon.”

“I will. I can’t believe I slept through the alarm. I’m sorry. I’ll be there shortly. See you soon.”

Blair hung up with a grunt, and Hester busied herself getting ready. Forty minutes and a shower later, she was out the door.

Carmen’s car was in the parking lot when Hester pulled in.

“You’re late. You’re never late!” Carmen admonished as they walked toward the gallery.

“Whatever Brynn did last night helped me sleep better than I have since Brad left. I even slept through my alarm.”

Carmen’s jaw dropped in shock. “You? Overslept? I wondered why I saw a pig flying this morning. It was just Jonas flipping bacon in the skillet but still.”

Hester giggled. “I feel ready to take on anything, so it’s a good thing.”

“Are you worried what the health inspector might find?”

“No. Thanks to Blair’s warning, the shop is already in tiptop shape. He shouldn’t find anything.”

“It’s human forces at play though, so who knows. You still suspect the temp?”

“I do. There’s just something about her. I can’t put my finger on it, but she’s bad news. Did you tell the agency we’re closed today?”

“Not yet. Aren’t the other stores open?”

“That’s what Blair said, but Renee said she wasn’t due back to Horny Confections until next week. She’s going to show up as planned unless you call and cancel for today.”

“They’ll charge me anyway. I’d like to see how she reacts to the whole thing. I’m sure we can find something for her to do.”

They entered the atrium where Blair waited for them.

“Is the temp coming today?” Blair asked.

Carmen and Hester exchanged a look and laughed.

“We were just talking about her actually. Since they are still going to charge Carmen for the day, we decided to keep her. I’m sure there’s something she can do.”

“Well, do you still think she might have something to do with this mess?”

Hester nodded. “I do. Did you call and make sure those people you were worried about are still locked up?”

Blair sighed. “I tried, but I’m still waiting for the warden to call me back. I’ll try again when I go back upstairs. If you’re willing, I can keep her busy in the art gallery today.
